Searching for "journalese"

Before reading Chapter 6,"Words," In William Zinsser's book On Writing Well, I had never heard of the of the term "journalese."  Zinsser defines the word as - a quilt of instant words patched together out of other parts of speech. Say what? He then goes on to provide examples of the word. I have to say the term has pinched a pickle…or quite honestly plucked a nerve or two of mine.  With that being said, I did my own search for examples elsewhere and I’m still a little confused by this term.

However, in an effort to understand and become a little at ease I looked at an article titled,” Beauty in unexpected places: street art in Baltimore as a source of joy.” This article was mainly about a woman’s daily commute to and from work (Baltimore County to Downtown Baltimore) and what she finds in the form of art that makes her happy along the way. To describe her journey, the author use words and statements such as:
  • predictable joys
  • emerging
  • penned
  • city still life …whimsy… unbridled optimism
  • screaming slash
  • visual exclamation
